Blocking and disowning: two different levers
Every request to block SIM on CNIC comes down to one of two levers. Blocking tells the network to stop the service: calls end, SMS dies, and the number goes quiet, but the record stays on your CNIC. Disowning goes deeper, because it takes the SIM off your name in the registry, so the entry stops showing up when 668 or PTA’s free cnic.sims.pk portal counts your record.

Which lever fits which problem
Block a lost or stolen SIM the same day through your network’s helpline; disown a SIM that was never yours at the franchise. Blocking needs no biometric and works from abroad. How do I disown a SIM at the franchise?
Disowning a SIM takes one in-person franchise visit and six steps. Carry your original CNIC to that network’s own franchise, say the words “SIM disowning” at the counter, and give the live NADRA biometric that instructions reported on 24 July 2026 make mandatory. Leave holding the reference slip, then re-run 668 a few days later to confirm the entry has gone.

Counter wording matters more than it should. Ask vaguely and staff may put you in the number-blocking queue, which leaves the registry entry alive. The words “SIM disowning” get you the right queue and the right form. Keep the reference slip afterwards, because it is your only proof that the request was made.
The biometric step is no longer just counter practice. Instructions reported on 24 July 2026 by ARY News and ProPakistani make NADRA biometric verification mandatory for SIM disowning, duplicate SIMs, ownership transfer and number portability. Reports add that the devices must run Live Finger Detection, which is built to reject fake or artificial fingerprints. How much does it cost to disown a SIM?
The disowning fee is capped at Rs 200. PTA set that ceiling on 1 January 2024 and made the service free where fraud is involved. A separate PTA advisory of 24 May 2026 stops a newly issued SIM being disowned or transferred during its first 365 days.
Any counter asking for more than Rs 200 is simply wrong, so show the rule and hold your ground. If the price will not fall, take the name of the outlet to PTA’s 0800-55055 complaint line. Complaints do carry weight. PTA issued enforcement orders against all four mobile operators on 13 and 16 July 2026. The 365-day lock is aimed at identity churn, and for victims it changes the playbook. Lost-SIM blocking: one call per network
Blocking is the half you can do from your sofa. Call the network helpline, clear the identity questions, and ask for the SIM to be blocked. Note the date, the agent, and any reference number you get. A day or two later, confirm it now shows as blocked on your CNIC.

Can I block SIM on CNIC from abroad?
From abroad, you can block SIM on CNIC entries, but you cannot disown them. Helplines take the call from any country. PTA’s free portal at cnic.sims.pk accepts CNIC, NICOP and POC numbers worldwide, so you can audit the record before and after. Disowning does not travel, because the live biometric step keeps it in person. Plan it for your next trip to Pakistan, and ask your network in writing about anything it offers beyond that.
