Start with the registry, not with memory. SMS your 13-digit CNIC, digits only, to 668 for about Rs 2. The free cnic.sims.pk portal shows the same roster from anywhere, with an activation date beside each line. Together they show how many lines sit on your CNIC against the cap of eight, five voice plus three data.

A line you never bought is not an “extra”. It is somebody else’s act wearing your name. Treat it as an incident and follow the unauthorised-SIM page. It often means your identity papers leaked somewhere, so check your breach exposure as well. Fraud belongs on the record as fraud. Report it to your operator, and where money or a crime is involved, to NCCIA on 1799.
Pakistan carried 208,057,255 active SIMs as of June 2026, per PTA’s telecom indicators — up from 204.771 million at end-February 2026. Dormant lines in that pile still carry a name, and until you act that name is yours.
Which SIM to keep: the decision table
When you deactivate extra SIM lines, keep the numbers your banks, wallets and family already know — usually the oldest numbers — and disown the spares. Pakistan caps SIMs at eight per CNIC, five voice and three data, under the Supreme Court’s ruling of 5 November 2015, so every keeper occupies a slot. Most people cancel in the wrong order, keeping the prettier number and disowning the one their bank still texts.

Where two keepers compete on the same network, age usually wins. An old number is part of your paperwork, and banks, schools and half your relatives already hold it. A fresh spare can be replaced in an afternoon. A ten-year-old number cannot.
Move your OTPs before anything else
Move every code-receiving duty to a keeper first, while the old SIM still works. Deactivating a number that still takes your bank codes is a self-inflicted lockout. Each migration fires a confirmation code at the old number. That is why the old line must stay alive. Dead first, migrated second does not work.
The OTP migration checklist

- WhatsApp, and any chat app tied to the number.
- Email recovery and social logins.
- School, employer, utility and shopping records.
- Any 2FA code that still points at the old line.
Then give the keeper a week of normal use. Stray codes will surface the accounts you forgot. An account remembered before disowning costs nothing. The same account remembered later can cost a frozen wallet and a long support queue.
Franchise disowning: the only real exit
Only a franchise visit takes a SIM off your CNIC record. No SMS, app or dial code does it. The exit is physical: a franchise or customer-service centre, your original CNIC, a live biometric, and a disowning request against the exact number. PTA caps the fee at Rs 200 and waives it in fraud cases, under its direction of 1 January 2024. Every search for “remove SIM from CNIC” ends at this same counter.
Before you deactivate extra SIM lines: what to carry
- Your original CNIC, valid on the day. If it has lapsed, clear the expired-CNIC problem first. PTA flagged 8.1 million SIMs sitting on expired CNICs in its advisory of 8 April 2026. If you are unsure where the card stands, check your CNIC details before you travel.
- The exact number you want removed, written down. Guessing at the counter wastes the trip.
- A recent line may not move at all. New SIMs carry a 365-day disowning and transfer lock under the PTA advisory of 24 May 2026.
- Ask for a reference number before you leave, in case the entry lingers.

Why binning the plastic changes nothing
Throwing the SIM away removes nothing from your record. Snapping the card in half feels final, but the registry disagrees. The CNIC-to-SIM link lives in operator and PTA systems, not in the chip. A discarded SIM stays on your record. It still counts against the eight-SIM cap, and it is still your problem if it resurfaces.

Operators set their own windows of zero use, and those windows differ, so confirm the figure with yours. After a long gap a number can be recycled to a stranger. Recycled is not removed. Until you disown the line, its paper trail still points at you. A number you meant to keep is better rescued through the reactivation guide than mourned.
Re-run 668 and close the loop
Send your CNIC to 668 again a few days after the franchise visit. The count should drop by exactly the lines you disowned. The date view on the portal confirms which entries vanished. Give a stubborn entry a week, because registry timings differ by operator.
If the count does not move
- Call the operator helpline and quote your reference number.
- Visit the same franchise and ask for the request status in writing.
- Escalate to PTA on 0800-55055.
