Expired CNIC SIM Rules: Renew First, Your Number Survives
An expired CNIC does not switch your SIM off today. It does put every expired CNIC SIM in a suspension queue. PTA’s advisory of 8 April 2026 placed about 8.1 million SIMs on expired or unrenewed CNICs in scope for phased suspension. Renew through the Pak-ID app, a NADRA centre or an e-Sahulat shop, and your number survives untouched. The steps sit below, and the wider toolkit lives at Check SIM Owner Details Pakistan.
Key takeaways
- The 8 April 2026 advisory covers about 8.1 million SIMs on expired or unrenewed CNICs.
- Three renewal routes work: the Pak-ID app from home, any NADRA centre, or an e-Sahulat shop.
- Your number never changes. Only the record behind it is updated.
- An expired card also blocks new SIM buys, transfers and disowning until you renew.
- After renewing, re-run 668 (about Rs 2) and your network’s BVS code.
Scope note: this page covers your own CNIC and the SIMs on it. Checking or reviving lines on someone else’s identity crosses into PECA Section 16. That law allows up to 3 years in prison, a fine up to Rs 5 million, or both. Our legality page draws the line in full.

What does the 8 April 2026 expired CNIC SIM advisory actually say?
PTA’s 8 April 2026 advisory puts SIMs held against expired or unrenewed CNICs in scope for suspension. The sweep runs in phases, not as one national switch-off, so an expired CNIC SIM keeps working only until its batch is called. Reporting carried by Geo News and The Express Tribune sized it at about 8.1 million SIMs across roughly 4.5 million CNICs.

Pakistan ran 208,057,255 active mobile subscriptions as of June 2026, per PTA’s telecom indicators. The flagged block is a small slice of that total, but it is still big enough to touch millions of homes.
Older guides still promise that a SIM stays live whatever the card says. The honest 2026 answer is narrower. Your line keeps working until the sweep reaches its batch, and nobody publishes the batch order.
Timing is the only real choice here. Renew before the sweep and you pay a card fee you owed anyway. Renew after it and you pay the same fee, plus dead banking OTPs, a silent WhatsApp and a trip to the shop. That recovery leg is mapped on the reactivate blocked SIM guide.
Which renewal route should you pick?
Three routes lead to the same renewed card: the Pak-ID app, a NADRA centre, or an e-Sahulat shop. All three update the same NADRA record that SIM checks read. Overseas Pakistanis lean on Pak-ID because it serves NICOP holders and drops the queue entirely.
| Route | Where it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Pak-ID app | Your phone, anywhere, including overseas | Renewals with no centre visit, and NICOP holders. |
| NADRA centre | Walk-in counters nationwide | Fresh photos, corrections and urgent cases. |
| e-Sahulat | Agent shops in smaller towns | Places where no NADRA centre sits nearby. |
- Pick the route that fits you. Pak-ID suits home use, a centre suits walk-ins, and e-Sahulat helps where centres are far.
- Finish the renewal and wait for the card to be issued. Fees and delivery tiers vary by card type, so read the schedule in the app or at the counter.
- Once the new card exists, SMS your CNIC to 668. Then run your network’s BVS code to see that the record caught up.
Pay nobody who offers to unblock a SIM while the CNIC is still expired. The record is read from NADRA, not from a middleman, and certainly not from the SIM database sites such agents wave around. Only the official fee through the official channel moves your case. If someone demands cash for this, report it. The NCCIA helpline is 1799, and the agency has run it since 3 June 2025; complaints also go to complaint.nccia.gov.pk. PTA takes service complaints on 0800-55055, and its WhatsApp Digital Assistant on 0315-0055055 has been live since 26 February 2026.
Does your mobile number change when you renew?
No. Your number stays exactly as it is. A renewal updates the validity dates on the card, and the SIM record then reads NADRA’s refreshed entry behind the same thirteen digits. Contacts, packages and balance all stay put. Nothing in the process moves or resets a live connection. If you want to confirm those details yourself, our guide on how to check your CNIC details maps the NADRA-approved channels.
What really costs people a number is the other path. You ignore the flag, the expired CNIC SIM block lands, and the dead line then sits unused for months. That moves you from expired-CNIC ground into dormancy ground. Networks apply reuse windows of their own there, and a reused number never comes back. Renew early and the risk never arrives.
What else does an expired CNIC freeze?
An expired card freezes every counter service that runs a live NADRA check. You cannot buy a new SIM at any network shop. You cannot move a number into or out of your name. You cannot disown a line you do not recognise. Each step needs a fresh biometric check, and that check fails on a lapsed card.

Disowning is cheap on its own. PTA capped the fee at Rs 200 on 1 January 2024, and it is waived where fraud is involved. None of that helps until the card is valid again.
The freeze bites hardest when your record already carries a problem. Say your CNIC count shows a stranger’s SIM. The disowning process cannot start until the card renews. The same gate holds for deactivating extras or reporting an unauthorised SIM in person. Renewal is step zero of every cleanup, not a side errand.
Fresh rules apply once the card is valid and you head back to buy. A second brand-new line still carries its own seven-day NADRA waiting period. New SIMs also sit under a 365-day lock before they can be disowned or moved, under a PTA advisory of 24 May 2026. Shops cannot sell new SIMs between midnight and 6 AM either, a ban PTA set on 19 May 2026.
A renewed card does not reset the ownership cap. Pakistan allows 8 SIMs per CNIC, split as 5 voice and 3 data. That split comes from a Supreme Court ruling of 5 November 2015. Our page on the SIM limit per CNIC shows how each type is counted.
How do you prove the record caught up?
Two checks confirm the expired CNIC SIM flag is behind you. Once the renewed card is issued, SMS your thirteen-digit CNIC to PTA’s 668 short code, which costs about Rs 2, then run your network’s BVS code. Read the per-network count against what you actually own, and flag anything you do not recognise.
A forgotten SIM in a drawer is easy to identify first: every network has a code to display your own number. The 668 guide decodes the reply format. The free portal at cnic.sims.pk shows the same record with activation dates and works from abroad; the portal guide walks through its screens. Beyond these two, all 12 official methods of confirming your record sit in one place.
Next, check that every number you keep shows as verified. Each network answers on its own short code.
| Network | BVS status check |
|---|---|
| Jazz | SMS your CNIC number to 6001. |
| Telenor | Send a blank SMS to 7751. |
| Zong | SMS the letter V to 7911. |
| Ufone | Dial *336*1# from the handset. |
Copy the Ufone string exactly: it is *336*1#, not *336# on its own. Our biometric verification guide reads the replies line by line.
A line that went quiet during the expired stretch may not wake on renewal alone. Pin down which numbers actually went dark with a blocked-SIM status check. Getting one back is a shop event, and it needs the new original CNIC plus a live thumb impression. The counter walkthrough lives on the reactivation guide.
Six mistakes that cost people their number
- Waiting for a national deadline. The sweep runs in batches, and no public list names your batch.
- Paying an agent to unblock a SIM while the card is still expired. That money buys nothing.
- Assuming renewal alone wakes a line that was already cut. Many cases still need a shop visit.
- Renewing the card and never checking the record. 668 and cnic.sims.pk take two minutes.
- Buying a replacement number instead of renewing. Your old number survives, so there is nothing to replace.
- Sending a photo of your CNIC to a stranger who offers help. That is how records leak. If you have already done it, check your breach exposure.
Roman Urdu mein
CNIC expire ho jaye to SIM usi din band nahi hoti. PTA ki 8 April 2026 advisory ke mutabiq aisi taqreeban 8.1 million SIMs marhala-war suspension ki list mein hain. Matlab, cnic expire ho to sim band hone ka darwaza khul jata hai. Hal seedha hai. Pak-ID app, NADRA centre ya e-Sahulat se CNIC renew karwa lein. Number bilkul nahi badalta; sirf registry ka record update hota hai. Renewal ke baad 668 par CNIC bhej kar count dekhein. Phir apne network ka BVS code chala lein. Yaad rakhein: expire card par na nayi SIM milti hai, na transfer hota hai, na disown. Agar koi paisay le kar SIM khulwane ka dawa kare to 1799 par report karein.
Frequently asked questions
Cnic expire ho gaya: will my SIM stop working today?
Not today, in most cases. The advisory puts expired-CNIC SIMs in scope for phased suspension, which means batches over time rather than one national switch-off. Nobody outside the system knows when a given batch runs. Treat a working SIM as borrowed time and renew the card now.
Does my mobile number change when I renew the CNIC?
No. Your mobile number stays exactly as it is, and so do the thirteen digits of your CNIC. Renewal simply refreshes the validity of the card and the record behind it. Contacts, packages, balance, WhatsApp and banking OTPs all ride through untouched. Nothing in the process moves a connection.
Can I buy a new SIM while my CNIC is expired?
No. Every new SIM sale at a Jazz, Telenor, Zong or Ufone counter runs a live NADRA biometric check, and that check fails on a lapsed card. The same gate blocks transfers and disowning. That is why renewal is step one of any SIM cleanup, not an errand you defer.
My SIM was already suspended: is renewal enough to restore it?
Renewal fixes the NADRA record, but not always the service. Many restarts still need a shop visit with the new original CNIC and a fresh thumb impression on the network BVS device. Check first which numbers went dark, then follow our reactivate blocked SIM guide for the counter steps.
Which renewal route is fastest for overseas Pakistanis?
Pak-ID, almost always. The app was built to move renewals off the counter, and it serves NICOP holders abroad. Fees appear inside the app before you commit. e-Sahulat suits towns with no NADRA centre, while walk-in centres win when fresh photos or corrections are needed.
How do I know whether my CNIC has already expired?
Read the expiry date printed on the front of the card. If the card is lost or the print is unclear, NADRA channels confirm the record, and our guide on checking CNIC details lists them. Renew as soon as the date passes, because SIM rules read the live NADRA record.
Someone wants money to restore my SIM. What should I do?
Do not pay. No agent can lift an expired-CNIC flag while the card itself is expired, because the record is read from NADRA. Renew through an official route, then finish any shop step yourself. Report the demand to the NCCIA helpline 1799, or to the PTA helpline 0800-55055.
