11 July 2026NCCIA holds three for allegedly selling citizens’ telecom data
On a PTA complaint, the NCCIA arrested three men accused of running a network that obtained and sold sensitive records: call records, SIM information, family registration details and location data. 11 July 2026Sahiwal raid: 329 illegally activated SIMs seized, female suspect held
PTA announced on its official X account that, acting on its complaint, the NCCIA apprehended a female suspect in Sahiwal allegedly involved in the bulk sale of illegally activated SIMs; follow-up reporting put the haul at 329 SIMs across the four major networks. Reminder this month: audit your own CNIC via 668 or cnic.sims.pk.

9 July 2026Fake-WhatsApp-accounts case: Sahiwal woman arrested on PTA complaint
Dawn reported the arrest of Safia Afzal, a Sahiwal resident, for allegedly creating fake WhatsApp accounts as part of an organised network. Fake accounts ride on SIMs, which is why the self-check habit stays the defence.

1 Jul 2026Telenor Pakistan merges into PTML (Ufone’s group)
The Islamabad High Court approved the amalgamation on 30 June, completing the merger on 1 July 2026 (CCP had granted conditional approval in October 2025). Brands, codes and SIMs keep working for now; expect gradual convergence of codes and franchises.

PTA advised that WhatsApp accounts linked to blocked or deactivated SIMs may become inaccessible, and told users to verify their WhatsApp number sits on an active, biometrically verified SIM before they get locked out. The quiet lesson: your number is your digital identity, so keep the SIM that carries it alive.

28 Jun 2026Expired-CNIC SIMs: the renewal warning, renewed
PTA repeated that SIMs registered on invalid, cancelled or expired CNICs face phased suspension, with about 4.9 million SIMs (4,906,611 — NADRA’s count first announced 17 June 2025 via ProPakistani, re-cited in this June-2026 report) in scope. Renew before expiry via Pak-ID or a NADRA center, update the record with your operator, and your numbers never notice a thing.

24 May 2026The 365-day rule: new SIMs locked against disowning and transfer
PTA’s advisory extended the lock on newly activated SIMs from 60 days to 365 days: for one year from activation, the SIM can’t be disowned or transferred. The goal is to stop the buy-activate-dump cycle behind SIM fraud. If a SIM appears on your CNIC that you never bought, complain the same day; the lock is on voluntary disowning, and fraud cases go through the complaint route.

19 May 2026Midnight-to-6AM ban on new SIM sales
New SIM issuance is barred between midnight and 6:00 AM. Franchises and retailers can’t activate new connections in that window; existing SIMs are unaffected.

8 Apr 20268.1M SIMs flagged on expired or renewal-due CNICs
PTA advised that about 8.1 million SIMs sit on expired or renewal-due CNICs (roughly 4.5M CNICs), including 1.5 million tied to deceased persons’ documents. Suspensions follow in phases. If your CNIC is near expiry, renew via Pak-ID or NADRA and your number stays yours; then re-run 668 as a baseline.

PTA’s official WhatsApp helpline went live at 0315-0055055 (with a QR on pta.gov.pk). It answers service queries and routes complaints. Its official name is “PTA Digital Assistant”; it never asks for OTPs or payments.

Jan 2026NADRA facial-recognition fallback for SIM verification
Where fingerprints fail (common for elderly citizens and manual workers), NADRA’s facial-recognition certificate (Rs 20, valid 7 days) can complete SIM biometrics as a fallback. It is not a “dual biometric mandate” for everyone; claims of one are fabricated.

19 Jan 2026SIM retention facility for overseas Pakistanis
PTA introduced a retention route so prepaid numbers survive long stays abroad: activate the service through your operator, then keep the SIM alive with at least one activity every 180 days (a call, an SMS, a data session or a recharge). With cnic.sims.pk already working worldwide, expats can now both keep and monitor their Pakistani numbers from anywhere.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (which took over cybercrime from FIA) launched 1799 as its 24/7 helpline, with complaint.nccia.gov.pk as the portal. The old 1991 number belongs to the FIA era; current complaints go to 1799.

24 Jan 20247-day NADRA wait for a second new SIM
After activating a new SIM, a 7-day NADRA-verification gap applies before the next new one. First SIMs, duplicates (same number re-issued), ownership transfers and MNP ports are exempt.

1 Jan 2024Disowning fee capped at Rs 200, waived in fraud cases
Operators may charge up to Rs 200 for disowning a SIM less than six months old; the fee is waived where the SIM was issued fraudulently. Older SIMs: free.

5 Nov 2015Supreme Court sets the cap: 5 voice + 3 data = 8
Under CJ Anwar Zaheer Jamali, the cap became 5 voice SIMs plus 3 data SIMs per CNIC, combined across all networks. Still the law today; every “25 SIMs” or “reduced to 6” claim you see contradicts this order.

Second, expect a document: real changes come as advisories, directions or SRO-style notices, and real coverage names them. No. The lock targets voluntary disowning and transfers. Fraud goes through the complaint route: report to NCCIA at 1799 (or complaint.nccia.gov.pk) and the operator’s franchise the same day you spot it. The activation date shown on cnic.sims.pk is your evidence.
